As the material leaves the conveyor's head pulley, it enters a free-fall trajectory. The sampler collects a representative sample by periodically traversing through the falling material stream and intercepting either the entire stream or the portion required by applicable sampling standards.

The cutter arm moves through the falling material stream at a predetermined speed, intercepts a portion of the material, and directs the collected sample into the sample handling and collection system.
